CLIC's "Hush the Shushing" Conference Focuses on Library Users

There was a good turnout last week for our Annual CLIC-wide Conference, "Hush the Shushing! What Are Library Users Saying?" held at Macalester College.

In the afternoon, our Panel of Library Users stole the show with an inspiring and honest appraisal of library service by representatives of our core user group: grad student, adult learner, undergrad, full-time faculty, and adjunct faculty. The Conference ended on a high note, with eight pecha-kucha-style lightning round presentations by library staff from each CLIC institution.

Parking:
A parking permit is needed for free parking on surface lots (spaces not marked reserved). If you need a parking permit, please contact Maureen at CLIC. Parking is also available at $1/hour in the Anderson ramp.

Lunch (on your own):
Lunch service is available at the Bishop's Bistro on the second floor of Anderson Center. It is a flat rate of $9.50 and offers several hot and cold meal options, including vegetarian, or the Klas Center on campus has a la carte sandwiches and soups. Off campus options within walking distance include the Black Sea (Turkish), Gingko Coffeehouse, Mirror of Korea.

Are you aware of CLIC member library activities focusing on their users? On October 24, CLIC's annual conference will delve into user-focused issues, with an emphasis on recent research.

Our keynote presenter, Dr. Frank Cervone, will speak on "Focusing on the user: Best practices based on research." Dr. Cervone’s prior experience includes more than 20 years of leadership in developing systems and services that have helped to advance teaching and learning in higher education environments. Some of his major areas of interest include management of information technology and information organizations; accreditation in higher education; data analysis; the effect of social networks on innovation; and the use of library and information resources for advancing teaching and learning. The author of four books in applied information technology, multiple book chapters, and numerous articles, he writes a regular column in OCLC Systems and Services on digital project management. Presenter Eric Forte will provide a summary of findings from the OCLC Research report "Parents, Alumni and Libraries: What our customers really believe about the library." Eric Forte, Member Services Consultant, joined OCLC in October 2010. Most recently, Eric was Associate Dean for Library Services at Boise State University, managing public services and IT and coordinating assessment activities. Eric previously served as Economics Librarian, Reference Services Coordinator, and Head of Access Services at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Eric's writings include Fundamentals of Government Information: Mining, Finding, Evaluating, and Using Government Resources (Neal-Schuman, 2011) and The Basic Business Library: Core Resources and Services (ABC-CLIO, 2011). Eric holds an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his undergraduate degree is from the University of Texas at Austin.
